tuesday league by Tom Hebert...

The Tuesday League is at full strength and growing. The snow birds are back in Florida and several new members are now qualifying. Two completed rounds are required before one becomes eligible for prize monies. A typical turnout of players on Tuesday mornings is in the neighborhood of thirty people.

If a person is interested in joining the Tuesday League they should contact Tom Hébert. His email address is bogypar@tampabay.rr.com and his telephone number is 688-5649.

The Tuesday League plays at Oak Hills Golf Course and Driving Range for twenty-six weeks through the winter. For the other twenty-six weeks [the summer months] the league travels to courses in the area.

Players arrive around 8:15 and play begins at 9:00 AM using a shot gun start. Foursomes are determined by shuffling cards having the player’s names. Sometimes there are a few threesomes. The Commissioner determines the groupings.

Before play $8 is collected from each participant. This money forms the prize money pot. All of the money collected is returned as prizes. Five dollars per player goes into place money [1st, 2nd and 3rd] and three dollars per player goes into a kitty and is paid to the players closest to the pin on the four par three holes.

Participants in effect compete against themselves. Each player has a personal point figure they attempt to surpass. A par is worth 2 points, a bogey is worth 1, a birdie gets 4 points and an eagle gets 8 points. A double bogey or more gets nothing. When players know points will not be gained they are asked to pick up to speed play.

The Tuesday League has a wide range of ability represented. There are a few players are scratch golfers who have to get nearly 35 points to break even! But there are also some who need to get 8 points to break even and they sometimes struggle to do it. An average is 17-18 points. When players start their rounds their established points are used to determine their success for the day.

On alternate Tuesdays, members play from the white tees one week and the gold tees the next week. This is done to allow everyone a chance to win.

The League has specific rules. A rule booklet is provided.

A member may bring and play with a guest but guests are not eligible for prizes.
