news about oak hills...

In previous issues of TeeTalk I've kept you in the loop about the progress and delays of the future golf resort plans coming to Oak Hills Golf Club. I kept you well versed on what took place at the meetings with the county's Planning and Zoning Commission and the Homeowners Association.

After listening to many of the homeowners and neighbors, I find most gave their vital support in the Oak Hills Golf Club resort project. Many see a great improvement at golf course already, since the new owner has taken over. And they feel the new golf resort would be an asset to their neighborhood.

Recently I learned the plans for the new resort hotel and rental villas on the 215-acre golf course property have been approved. These plans have since been posted in the golf shop.

OHGC_Resort_Plan_2-08ab_6.jpg (1131802 bytes)The plan that shows the main proposed resort area is cropped from the overall plan and is shown in the thumbnail photo at the left. You may find it's a bit difficult to read when you double-click on the small photo thumbnail to enlarge it. That's because the plans are actually drawn on an aerial view photo with the new changes marked in a yellow highlighter.

The yellow markings above the driving range are where the rental villas will be located. The driveway (shown in black) off Northcliffe Boulevard leads to a circle and the new clubhouse, hotel and restaurant. To each side of the driveway is parking. This plan is not easier to read, but it's all I have to share with you at this time. When I get the new plans I will reveal them to you.

Large-scale ventures such as this take time. I presume it might be many more months before ground breaking begins. I know some analysis and ground testing has to be completed first. But you can count on me keeping you informed of any latest news as well as when a construction date is scheduled.

 valentine's day ace...

Valentine's Day was a day for celebration for Nancy Fisher (pictured in photo)! A member of the Thursday Ladies League, Nancy received her very first hole-in-one at Oak Hills while golfing with her league on the morning of February 14th.

Mrs. Fisher used her 9 wood from 133 yards on the 4th hole. She watched her ball rolled on the green and disappear into the hole. Her ace was witnesses by three gals in her foursome; Judy Colmery, Marge Williams and Peg Every,

Karen Stacy, the league president, said the league collects a dollar from each golfer every week. "Their dollars are added to their hole-in-one pot," Karen said. "Sometimes the pot has a small amount and other times it has accumulated into a larger amount until someone gets a hole-in-one."

Lucky Nancy won the pot on Valentine's Day... which contained $116. Good for you Nancy and our congratulations!

golf etiquette is an essential part of the game...

Are you aware filling divots and fixing ball marks are part of golf etiquette? Just think about those playing behind you. How happy they will be to have their ball gets a nice, smooth roll to the hole, resulting in a lower score.

The average golfer leaves about 12 ball marks during a typical round of golf. With a daily average of 160 rounds on a typical golf course, the greens will suffer 1,920 ball marks each day and 58,400 ball marks per month--more than 700,000 ball marks each year! Further, consider that the average number of divots a typical golfer creates during a round of golf is 45. This equates to 7,200 divots a day or 2,628,000 divots each year!

While golfers may be unaware of the impact of their play, these numbers are mind-boggling.

Ball marks, those indentations caused when a ball lands sharply on a soft green, have been ruining good putts long before the days of Bobby Jones. Unrepaired ball marks take two to three weeks to properly heal, leaving behind unsightly, uneven putting surfaces. On the other hand, a repaired ball mark only takes half that time to heal.

Beginner or pro, it is your responsibility as a golfer to fix your own marks. If you're truly a steward of the game, you'll fix any others you see while your partners are putting. There's really not much to it, but there are a few guidelines you should follow when making these repairs.

The right way to fix a ballmark...

Use a pronged ball mark repair tool, knife, key or tee.

Insert it at the edges of the mark......
not the middle of the depression.

Bring the edges together with a gentle twisting motion, but don't lift the center. Try not to tear the grass.

Smooth the surface with a club or your foot. You're done when it's a surface you would want to putt over.

Thank you for practicing good golf etiquette and making these repairs. Your fellow golfers and golf courses everywhere appreciate it!

we have gift certificates...

Having a problem finding the right gift for that special someone? A birthday, anniversary or retirement gift. Oak Hills Golf Club gift certificates make a great gift for him or her! They can be purchased in the clubhouse or by calling (352) 683-6830. It’s a sure way to make any golfer 'A Happy Swinger'!

farewell snowbirds...

Some of our snowbirds will be ready to head north again soon. Our very best wishes for a pleasant and beautiful spring and summer and we look forward to seeing you again this fall.

your feedbacks...

We thank you for the many positive feedbacks. Many come to us with nice comments about our golf course, our staff and TeeTalk Newsletter. So often, and unfortunately, people are quick to remark on a negative. But, this is seldom the case with the feedbacks we receive. We enjoy reading your comments, ideas and praises, so please keep them coming! And, remember, your feedback could be the one drawn in our monthly golf give-away. So please keep them coming!

Happy swinging and best wishes....
